Typical ranges at 14
Many untrained 14-year-old male players test around 14 to 18 inches (36 to 46 cm) on a standing vertical. Regular basketball players commonly land near 18 to 22 inches (46 to 56 cm), and well-trained or early-maturing athletes can reach the mid-20s. Female players of the same age often cluster a few inches lower on average, though trained athletes regularly exceed general norms.
Approach jumps usually measure several inches higher than standing jumps, so always note which test you used. Comparing your running jump against someone else's standing jump is the most common reason online numbers look discouraging.
Why maturity matters more than age
Two 14-year-olds can differ by four or five years of biological maturity. An early developer may already have adult levels of muscle mass and tendon stiffness, while a later developer has barely started. Neither predicts the final athlete — late developers frequently end up jumping higher once growth completes.
During rapid growth, coordination often dips temporarily: limbs get longer before the nervous system recalibrates. A flat month or a small drop in test results during a growth spurt is normal and not a sign that training failed.
What good and elite look like at 14
As rough markers for male players: under 15 inches is developing, 18 to 22 inches is solid, 24 to 27 inches is very good for the age, and anything above 28 inches is exceptional. Touching the rim usually needs a standing reach plus vertical near 120 inches, so many 14-year-olds are still a season or two away.
Use these markers to choose training priorities, not to judge potential. A 14-year-old with average jump numbers and excellent footwork and shooting is in a far better position than the reverse.
How to train safely at this age
Prioritise landing mechanics, single-leg control, sprint technique, and general strength before high-volume jump training. Two short sessions a week of low-volume jumps — pogos, box jumps with a soft landing, broad jumps — plus bodyweight or lightly loaded squats, split squats, hinges, and calf work is plenty alongside basketball.
Avoid depth jumps from high boxes, heavy repeated max jumping, and training through knee or heel pain. Growth-plate areas around the knee and heel are more sensitive at this age; soreness that lingers more than 48 hours means back off and rebuild gradually.
Measure progress without guessing
Test under repeatable conditions: use the same surface, shoes, warm-up, measuring method, and time of day. Record three good attempts and keep the best valid result. A single number is useful, but a trend measured every four to six weeks tells you far more about whether training is working.
Basketball performance is never explained by one measurement. Skill, decision-making, coordination, strength, speed, mobility, health, and competitive experience all influence what happens in a game. Treat these benchmarks as a starting point for training—not a label, guarantee, or limit on what a player can become.

A benchmark is most useful when it changes a decision. If a test shows that your jump is strong but acceleration is average, the next training block might emphasize sprint mechanics and relative strength. If your standing reach estimate suggests that dunking requires a large jump, you can set smaller milestones such as touching the net, backboard, and rim while improving approach technique.
Avoid treating online averages as precise population science. Different sources use standing, countermovement, approach, or device-based tests. Samples may include recreational players, school athletes, combine prospects, or professionals. Those groups should not be blended without explanation. Compare like with like and retain your own testing protocol over time.
