The basic dunk equation
A regulation basketball rim is 120 inches from the floor. Touching the rim requires a maximum reach of 120 inches, so the simplest equation is 120 minus standing reach. Dunking needs more clearance. Most one-hand dunks become realistic when the wrist or a meaningful portion of the hand reaches roughly six inches above the rim, creating a target reach near 126 inches.
Two-hand dunks usually require additional clearance because both hands must control the ball and pass the rim together. Nine to twelve inches above the rim is a practical target for powerful two-hand finishes, windmills, or dunks completed through contact. Hand size, ball control, approach technique, and whether you jump from one foot or two can move the requirement up or down.
Why standing reach matters more than listed height
Two players who are both six feet tall can have very different arm lengths, shoulder widths, and standing reaches. A player with a 7-foot-10 reach needs 32 inches to touch the rim and about 38 inches to reach a six-inch dunk target. Another player with an 8-foot reach needs only 24 inches to touch and about 30 inches to dunk.
That difference explains why generic charts based only on height can mislead athletes. Measure standing reach against a wall, on a Vertec, or beneath a backboard before setting a goal. If you cannot measure it today, an estimate near 1.31 to 1.33 times height can provide a temporary starting point, but replace the estimate when possible.
Touching rim is not the same as dunking
A rim touch proves that your fingertips reach 10 feet; it does not prove that your hand and the ball can clear the cylinder. The ball adds size, changes your arm position, and requires control during the fastest part of the jump. Players with smaller hands may need to cup the ball, use two hands, or gather it differently.
Approach speed also matters. Many athletes jump several inches higher with a running approach than from a standing countermovement. Practice your final two steps, arm swing, penultimate step, and takeoff distance while you train raw power. A cleaner approach can unlock height that already exists without changing your squat strength.
Set a useful training target

If the gap is under four inches, technique, ball handling, and a short power phase may be enough. A gap of five to ten inches usually calls for months of progressive strength, sprint, and plyometric work. Larger gaps are long-term projects. Build tendon capacity and landing skill before chasing high-impact jump volume.
Measure progress without guessing
Test under repeatable conditions: use the same surface, shoes, warm-up, measuring method, and time of day. Record three good attempts and keep the best valid result. A single number is useful, but a trend measured every four to six weeks tells you far more about whether training is working.
Basketball performance is never explained by one measurement. Skill, decision-making, coordination, strength, speed, mobility, health, and competitive experience all influence what happens in a game. Treat these benchmarks as a starting point for training—not a label, guarantee, or limit on what a player can become.
How to use basketball benchmarks responsibly
A benchmark is most useful when it changes a decision. If a test shows that your jump is strong but acceleration is average, the next training block might emphasize sprint mechanics and relative strength. If your standing reach estimate suggests that dunking requires a large jump, you can set smaller milestones such as touching the net, backboard, and rim while improving approach technique.
Avoid treating online averages as precise population science. Different sources use standing, countermovement, approach, or device-based tests. Samples may include recreational players, school athletes, combine prospects, or professionals. Those groups should not be blended without explanation. Compare like with like and retain your own testing protocol over time.
