The Best Basketball Warm-Up Routine (10 Minutes)

A bad warm-up makes you slow for the first 10 minutes of a game. A good one primes your nervous system, mobilizes your hips, and gets your shot warm — without leaving anything in the tank.

Why static stretching is the wrong move

Touching your toes for 30 seconds reduces explosive output for up to 45 minutes. Save it for after the workout. Pre-game, you want dynamic movement that raises core temperature and rehearses game patterns.

The 10-minute structure

  1. 0–2 min: Light jog + arm circles
  2. 2–4 min: Leg swings, hip openers, ankle bounces
  3. 4–6 min: Lateral slides + closeouts
  4. 6–8 min: Form shooting (close range)
  5. 8–10 min: Game-speed catch and shoot
