Every good shot begins from the ground up. Feet set slightly narrower than shoulder width, shooting-side foot a touch ahead, and weight balanced on the balls of both feet. If the base drifts, the release will drift with it, no matter how clean the arm motion looks.
Above the base, the ball rests in a pocket near the shooting-side hip on the catch, then rises in a straight line to the release point. The elbow tracks under the ball, the wrist snaps fully, and the follow-through freezes until the ball touches the rim. That freeze is a diagnostic tool as much as a habit.
Arc, rotation, and depth
A shot that enters the rim at a steeper angle uses more of the hoop. Research and coaching consensus point toward a release around 45 to 52 degrees for most players. Flat shots reduce the effective margin for error, so if you shoot line drives you may still hit at close range and miss more from three.
Backspin stabilizes the ball in flight and produces friendly bounces on rim contact. Depth control—hitting the middle of the hoop rather than the front or back—usually comes from leg drive and rhythm rather than arm strength. Rep structure that actually improves you
Volume works only when the reps are game-like. Simulate real footwork: catch and shoot off a pass, one dribble pull-ups, screen actions, and off-balance finishes. Mix in spots you avoid, because avoiding them is how you stay weak there.
Track makes and misses from a small number of consistent spots. When a spot dips for two sessions in a row, spend the next session diagnosing it: video from behind and from the side, then compare to a known good rep. Fix one thing at a time.
Turn testing into a training plan
Test under repeatable conditions: use the same surface, shoes, warm-up, measuring method, and time of day. Record three good attempts and keep the best valid result. A single number is useful, but a trend measured every four to six weeks tells you far more about whether training is working.
Basketball performance is never explained by one measurement. Skill, decision-making, coordination, strength, speed, mobility, health, and competitive experience all influence what happens in a game. If a test shows that your jump is strong but acceleration is average, the next training block might emphasize sprint mechanics and relative strength. If your standing reach estimate suggests that dunking requires a large jump, you can set smaller milestones such as touching the net, backboard, and rim while improving approach technique.
Avoid treating online averages as precise population science. Different sources use standing, countermovement, approach, or device-based tests. Samples may include recreational players, school athletes, combine prospects, or professionals. Those groups should not be blended without explanation. Compare like with like and retain your own testing protocol over time.
